Kind eyes looked at me as a gentle voice spoke, "Katja?"The voice was warm and rich, full of undeniable pride and joy, "Katja, you are not supposed to be here."
Here? Where is here?
I opened my eyes and saw a smokey-grey Tyberan looking down at me with friendly eyes. There was a golden circlet dotted with emeralds upon his brow and his white robes flowed around him. Just as all the books depicted him.
Bast.
Had I been standing, I would have thrown myself to the ground in reverence, but all I could do was stare. He chuckled warmly, "You look as if you have seen a ghost."
"I--" I couldn't speak to Him. This was Bast, no ordinary mortal.
He sat next to me and touched my shoulder, "What is it, Katja?"
I am not worthy.
Those kind eyes flashed, "You are worth far more than you realize."
I stared at him, knowing it was useless to try and hide anything from Him, "I failed you, Bright One."
"How?" he asked, his ears tilting out slightly with his inquiry.
"I was exiled. . ."
"That signifies that you failed me?"
"Doesn't it? I disobeyed the Law. . ."
"Katja, to whom does the Law belong?"
"It is the Law of Sekhmet, but She is your. . ."
He raised a hand to silence me, "What She is to me and the Laws She has created mean nothing to me. Look into your own heart, Katja, and you will find the truth."
I sat there, concentrating on the feelings within myself. There was a flutter of emotion and images, came unbidden to my mind. Soft sandy blond hair. Pointed ears. Grey eyes full of. . . I glanced up at Bast, wondering if he had seen the unbidden thought.
He looked at me and smiled, "It is nothing to be ashamed of, dear Katja. He has a good heart. I think you would be surprised by him."
I looked at my god curiously, wondering what he meant. However, as I opened my mouth to question him further--he vanished.
