The Kindling of a Flame--The Wait

The following night, I sat at my regular seat of the Inn. Another of my friends, Quinn, joined me. She shared her plans for her wedding to Darkstar, but no matter how much I tried to pay attention, my thoughts were elsewhere. She seemed to notice my preoccupation and wandered off to visit others of her friends.

I stared at my glass as my worry continued to grow, until only one thought remained very clear in my mind.

I shouldn't have let him go.

I could no longer bear sitting, so I rose, going outside to the lake's edge that had always offered so much comfort. Yet, it brought no calm this night, my thoughts were too distant, focused on a missing friend.

Let him come back safe.

I drew my cloak around myself, and wondered why it was that I was so worried. He was an enormously capable individual. If anyone would be able to pull this off, he would. These thoughts did nothing to soothe me.

I turned, returning to the taproom. Yet, I was unwilling to remain there amid so much merriment, so I ascended the stairs to my room. Once there, I could only lay upon my bed, staring out into the depths of the night.
